Further
Educational accomplishments: After high school graduation,
I went to work as a keypunch operator at Prudential in Houston. Gloria Walker
worked at Prudential too – hi, Gloria, remember those days of the great free lunches,
courtesy of Prudential? After that, I worked at New Orleans Public Service as
a cashier. I lost so much money for NOPSI and made so little money myself that
I decided to go back to school. I completed the general business practices program
of Houston Business College, metropolitan division, University of Houston, and
went to work for Tennessee Gas Transmission, where, by a fluke, I got a “man’s”
job calculating daily oilfield equipment depreciation for five states, using a
Burroughs calculator. After a year, I quit, understandably I think, and moved
back home to New Orleans.
Family
history: I married Sandy Evans, Fortier ‘50
or ‘51 (not sure which; we later divorced and he died in 1998), and worked for,
among others, Kelly Girls – with Dotty (Duke) Gibbs, at Humble, remember, Dotty?
Then, I worked at Baptist Hospital in the Dept. of Pastoral Care, a psychoanalytically-oriented
program, which gave me an excellent opportunity to read about and discuss all
kinds of fascinating pathology with experts. But it was soooo depressing. I quit,
got pregnant and had my son Bruce, who is a Tulane A. B. Freeman School of Business
grad and (here I’m bragging) a C.P.A. who passed the exam on the first sitting.
Where he got his math genes from I do not know. I couldn’t pass Algebra II to
save my soul.
Achievements
and Occupational History: Before going back to paid work, I did volunteer work, serving
on the Board of Admissions, Sophie Gumbel Guild Day Care Service, the Steering
Committee, Community Coordinated Child Care, and was a gubernatorial appointee
to a two-year term on the Advisory Council on Mental Health, State of Louisiana.

Reunions attended: I attended the 35th,
45th, 50th, and 55th reunions. As to the 60th,
well . . . who knows.
Other
personal comments: I retired from Tulane University after twenty-nine years as supervisor
of the graphics division of the University’s printing department. While there,
other staff, friends and I published a fanzine for two and a half years called
“Tripe.” Our motto was “from our guts to yours.” Lots of fun. During that time
I took credit and non-credit courses in art/art history and other fun subjects,
such as screen writing, from Tulane, Delgado, UNO, New Orleans GlassWorks, New
Orleans Academy of Fine Arts, and the wonderful BFF (Before the Federal Flood)
People Program. Last summer, I was honored to be picked by Shirley Ann Grau to
participate in a writing workshop she conducted. This summer, my creative efforts
are going into painting my living room.
