Achievements and Occupational History: Managed husband’s neurosurgical practice, became political activist and served 4 years on AMA’s PAC board as only female, only non-physician member.  Following my diagnosis in 1991 I transferred activism to eradication of breast cancer.  Served as consumer advocate on Dept. of Defense, UCLA, and Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research grant proposal committees.  Served 4 years as a board member of the National Breast Cancer Coalition.  Was honored by and featured on cover of MAMM magazine along with 49 other men and women “making a difference” in breast cancer advocacy.  Began a new chapter in my life when I lost my husband in 2007.  Survived a funeral and 2 weddings all within 5 weeks.  In the following year I sold a car, bought another one (a hybrid), redecorated the master bedroom and bath, re-landscaped the front yard, learned about managing and selling timber, took a cruise and traveled to DC, Denver, Louisville and San Diego.  Since my husband died in 2007, I've continued to travel: China, Tibet, Tunisia the year before the Arab Spring and cruise-New England, Canary Islands, Mediterranean, Sicily and Malta, Singapore to Hong Kong, French Polynesia this October, and Holland to Budapest is scheduled for July 2015.

Other personal comments: Try to live my life so that each morning when I wake up and put my feet on the floor, Satin says, “Oh S___!  She’s awake again!”  Following is an Edith Wharton quote, which I’m trying to incorporate into my philosophy of life:  “In spite of illness, in spite even of the arch enemy sorrow, one can remain alive long past the usual date of disintegration if one is Unafraid of Change, Insatiable in intellectual curiosity, Interested in big things, And happy in small ways”.
